How to Downgrade iOS 9 to iOS 8, Apple has finally released iOS 9, the most awaited update for its mobile OS for iPhone, iPod touch and iPad. It comes with several new features like Proactive Assistant, Transit Maps, improved battery life and much more. If you updated you iOS device to the new iOS 9 accidently, then here is a good news for you. You can now downgrade back to iOS 8.4.1 as apple is still signing the firmware file for iOS 8.4.1.

Keep in mind that you cannot downgrade back to iOS 8.4 as Apple is not signing firmware for iOS 8.4 any more.

Downgrade iOS 9 to iOS 8 – Thing you should know

  1. You can only downgrade back to iOS 8.4.1 and not to any other version.
  2. Downgrading will not be possible once Apple stops signing iOS 8.4.1 firmware.
  3. Do not forget to backup your data using iCloud or iTUnes on your PC so that you can restore your data in case anything goes wrong.

iOS 8.4.1 Signing Status

Apple signing iOS 8.4.1 is very important for downgrading iOS 9 to iOS 8.4.1 because once Apple stops signing there is no way to go back. Current Status of iOS 8.4.1 is Active.

Methods to downgrade from iOS 9 to iOS 8.4.1 :

Method 1 – Using DFU Mode

Before proceeding this method is effective but time consuming as it restores  data from the backup you made.

First, you need to enter DFU mode on your device.

  1. Connect your device to your PC.
  2. Switch off your device using the power button
  3. Press and hold the power button for 3 sec.
  4. Now, start pressing the home button and continue pressing the power button for further 10 seconds.
  5. Release the power button now while continuing to hold the home button until you see a popup from iTunes. This means that your device is now in recovery mode.
  6. Tap on the OK button and then on Restore iPhone / iPad button.
  7. Now you will see a pop up to Restore and update. Click on that to continue.
  8. In your display you will see information about the iOS 8.4.1. Click on the Next and then on the Agree button to continue.
  9. The iTunes app will download and install iOS 8.4.1 on your device.
  10. Finally after everything is done you will see a white ‘Helo’ screen. Follow the further instructions  to set up and restore your device.

Method 2 – Using iOS 8.4.1 IPSW File (Recommended)

This method of downgrading is faster and effective but it is not usually recommended.

  1. Turn off the Find my iPhone option by going to Settings > iCLoud > Find my iPhone.
  2. Download  iOS 8.4.1 firmware file on your device.
  3. Download the suitable firmware file from our download page for your device from here.
  4. Now connect your iPhone, iPad or iPod touch running iOS 9 to your PC.
  5. Open the iTunes app and Select your device.
  6. Now Keep holding the Alt key for Mac and Shift for Windows and tap on the check for update option.
  7. Launch the ipsw file downloaded earlier.
  8. iTunes will verify the update to iOS 8.4.1.
  9. Confirm by clicking on Update.
  10. With this, iTunes should downgrade your device to iOS 8.4.1
  11. After the downgrading is completed,your device will restart and you will see ‘Slide to upgrade’ option. Enter the passcode to complete the process.
